Jess – The feeling St. Mary’s gives me is just a warm feeling, you always feel safe and there is always someone to have your back. Another word I’d use is passion because all of the teachers are really passionate about their subjects and St. Mary’s is definitely the place to find out what you love.
Ben – If I was to describe St. Mary’s in three words, it would be Fidem Vita Fateri, which is our school motto – show your faith by the way you live, love and learn. Everyone embraces the motto, especially in class because everyone has such a passion for their subject.
Jess – I’ve always loved the school and I’ve always felt so welcome since day one. I thought this was a good way to be able to give back and give something to the school because they’ve given so much to me.
Ben – I applied for Head Boy because I saw the opportunity as a way to inspire younger years and I feel like by now earning this role I have that opportunity to inspire and make everyone feel valued.
Jess – I want to increase the connection between the older years and the younger years. Throughout my time at St. Mary’s I notice that pupils may have struggled or been upset and I want them to have someone to go to that may not necessarily be a teacher. The prefects are a lovely team of people who would be happy to help anyone who may be struggling. I hope to be a barrister when I grow up so this role will help increase my leadership skills and public speaking will really help me with that too.
Ben – I want to leave a really big impact on the school, changing any issues that I currently see and improving things for everyone. Whether that be whilst I’m still here or I can change it for future years to come. Just enhancing people’s view of the school and making it better.
Jess – The most valuable thing I’ve learnt is hard work and the fact that you don’t have to be that person that is born with all these talents, as long as you work hard, you can still come out on top.
Ben – The most important thing that I’ve learnt at St. Mary’s is to take all of the opportunities available. There are so many clubs on offer here, taking part in as many as possible will give you a better chance of succeeding in life.
Jess – My fondest memory at St. Mary’s is definitely the New York trip in February. Every school trip makes everyone so much closer whether that be with the students or the teachers. We just had so much fun and it was an amazing opportunity.
Ben – My fondest memory is a school trip to Iceland last October. It was eye-opening to see Iceland and its natural beauty. We got to see volcanoes and glaciers and the whole experience was really interactive.
Jess– The teachers. I think every teacher knows every pupil so personally and makes a real effort to do so.
Every teacher has a passion for their subject and this has really made me have a love for learning.
Ben – What makes St. Mary’s feel so special to me is the close-knit family feeling because it’s such a small school. From Upper Sixth to Year 7, everyone knows each other and it’s just a really good family feel.
Jess – I hope to go to university to study theology and after that, I’m going to convert to law and become a barrister.
Ben – After my time at St. Mary’s, I want to use all the skills that I’ve gained over the years through leadership and teamwork and joining the extra-curricular clubs (combined cadet force and music) and join the Royal Marines band as a trombonist. In doing that I will be able to earn a degree apprenticeship that all the skills I’ve learnt at St. Mary’s will go towards.
Jess – I think St. Mary’s has definitely prepared me for later life because I’ve learnt skills like public speaking and I’ve been able to make friends and socialise. I think it’s more than just academic, I think it is the personal aspect as well.
Ben – I definitely feel like St. Mary’s has set me up for later life because of the clubs such as the Duke of Edinburgh and the CCF. Gaining life skills which I can take on through life and in Sixth Form academically, the essay writing skills learnt through the EPQ – Extended Project Qualification has also prepared me for later life.
