The children and staff arrived dressed in their favourite book character costumes, all set for a fun-filled day celebrating the wonderful world of reading. We had Paddington Bears, Harry Potters, Spidermans, and many more. All of the children looked fantastic in their book character costumes!

On the morning of World Book Day, the Kindergarten and Preschool children received a surprise visit from The Highway Rat (Head of Early Years Mrs Haigh), who delighted them with a reading of The Highway Rat all while being in character!

Throughout the week, the children also visited St. Mary’s College Library, where they were captivated by stories read aloud by the School Librarian, Mrs Roose, the Teaching Assistant, Mrs Smith, and two college pupils, Jack and Kylah. Jack read Never Touch a Shark! and Kylah read Giraffes Can’t Dance. The children were fully engaged with the stories, proudly showing off their brilliant World Book Day costumes and speaking about their favourite books.

In the lead-up to World Book Day, the babies enjoyed a sensory play inspired by ‘The Gruffalo’. The children weren’t scared and explored the woodland objects and Gruffalo characters by giving them cuddles and kisses. It was a great way to engage the children with the book characters and explore the book further.

The fun continued outdoors, where the children celebrated World Book Day and Pancake Day. After reading The Runaway Pancake with Danielle, the children made their own pancakes in our mud kitchen! The children did a fantastic job measuring ingredients and mixing everything together before cooking their pancakes in the frying pan. To finish off their creations, they found natural toppings, like colourful leaves and twigs, to decorate their marvellous mud pancakes.

The children had a wonderful time celebrating books throughout the week, giving all of our little ones the opportunity to celebrate the day.
