Students and staff at St. Mary’s College in Crosby are celebrating an exceptional set of GCSE performances this year.
The outstanding feature of this summer’s results at St. Mary's is the large number of students who have achieved multiple passes at the highest grades.
14 per cent of candidates achieved 12 A* or A grades and a quarter achieved ten or more A* or A passes each. Almost a third of entrants (31 per cent) recorded nine or more A* or A grades.
Overall, 50 per cent of all the GCSE grades at St. Mary’s this year were A* or A passes.
In terms of individual performances, 16-year-old Ben Shenton from Southport was top of the class this year after achieving the highest possible A* mark in all 12 of his subjects.
Equally remarkable were the achievements of the school’s ‘straight A triplets’ from the Redmond family in Blundellsands.
Francesca, Nicholas and Elise achieved an impressive 36 top-grade GCSEs between them - 25 A* passes and 11 A grades.
Overall, St. Mary’s saw a significant rise to 90 per cent in the number of pupils who achieved five A*-C grades, including English and Maths.
St. Mary’s College Principal Mike Kennedy commented: “This is a very pleasing set of results which reflects both the hard work of our pupils, and the support they have received from staff and parents throughout their time at the school.
“The high proportion of candidates achieving multiple passes at A* or A grade, with a quarter of them achieving ten or more, is particularly encouraging and demonstrates the real academic strength in depth here at St. Mary’s.
“Achieving excellent results at GCSE level is a great foundation on which young people can build future success at A-level, at university and in their chosen careers.
“All our students and their families should be extremely proud of what they have achieved,” added Mr Kennedy.
