We are delighted to welcome parent, Mrs Imelda Sankson, to the Prep in the role of ‘teacher’ as she begins the lunchtime Sign Language Club.
Mrs Sankson’s eldest son Harry has just started in Reception and had already taught his classmates and Miss Johnson some signs. Harry has become an expert in this form of communication following the arrival of his little brother Theo, who was born completely deaf. Theo has just undergone ground breaking surgery with some hearing restored but he and his family rely on signing to communicate with him
Pupils from Reception, Year 1 and 2, together with a number of staff, attended Mrs Sankson’s first session and using British Sign Language, which makes use of space and involves movement of the hands, body, face and head, they learnt the alphabet, days of the week, a number of greetings and were able to put together short sentences.
Mrs Sankson is keen to raise the awareness of people who have little or no hearing and the importance of others in society being able to sign.
