Boys Sport Review - December 2015

Posted on 15 Dec 2015

The rugby teams have made a great start to the season. The under 12s have started well with wins against Bury and QEGS Blackburn as well as two draws. The under 13s have won six out of their nine matches and the under 14s have won half of their matches with the highlight a 40-36 win at Stonyhurst College. The 1st XV have also played well with five wins so far and notable wins against Cowley 17-7 and St David’s College 14-12. The 1st XV agonisingly have lost two games on the last play versus Rishworth and Rossall so what has undoubtedly been a good season could have been even better.

Congratulations to Ben Apps, Ben Holden and Finn Brown who have all made Merseyside Rugby Squads and Joe Stuart who has been picked up by Sale Sharks Academy.

The basketball season is also well underway with under 12s, 13s, 14s & 15s all winning half of their games so far in Division One of Sefton Schools. This year has also seen an exciting link made with Bath Street Marine Tennis Club where ten boys are coached every Monday Night. Jonny Bonner, 1st XV rugby captain 2012 and Caldy Rugby Club has come back to do some Strength & Conditioning with the 1st XV.

Where are they now?

Huge congratulations to Gavin Griffiths who starred for Lancashire in their National T20 win. Trusted with the last over of the game bowling against Shahid Afridi he managed to bowl an amazing over including dismissing the Pakistan captain. Gavin has also just signed an extension to his contract. In the picture shown below, he is seen receiving his England Under 19 cap from Mr Kennedy whilst still at St. Mary's.

In other sporting alumni news, Carl Fearns has left Bath and joined Lyon in France’s top rugby division.
