There were wonderful celebrations in the evening sunshine after the St. Mary’s College U15 Rugby Team landed red rose county honours by winning this season’s Lancashire Cup.

After seeing off the challenge of Kirkham Grammar School in the quarter final and Lancaster Royal Grammar School at the last four stage, the St. Mary’s boys beat Stonyhurst 20-14 in a thrilling final at Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Club.

The St. Mary’s scorers were Aaron Travis with a brace of tries and Luke Govier with a further touchdown with James Charnley adding a conversion and a penalty.

St. Mary’s Head of Rugby, John Armstrong, said: “The final was a fantastic match which will be remembered for a very long time, and we were delighted to come out on top in the game.

“Everyone in the PE department is very proud of the achievements of the under 15 side. They’ve worked very hard since Year 7 and things haven’t always gone their way but they’ve shown bags of resilience over the years.

“The draw for this season’s competition couldn’t have been harder and our lads had to beat some very good sides along the way so they thoroughly deserve their success.

“With our under 15s also winning the Bolton School Sevens and the Giggleswick Sevens, the under 12s winning the Audenshaw Sevens and St. Mary’s College Sevens, the Senior team winning the Rydal Sevens and being runners-up in the Birkenhead Sevens, and our First XV team still to face Bolton School in the Lancashire Plate final next week, it’s been a superb year for rugby at the school.”
