Earth Day 2023

21 Apr 2023

What on 🌎 is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event held on the 22nd of April to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It is a day of promoting action to change human behaviour and create global, national and local policy changes whilst also celebrating the achievements of environmental movements.

In celebration of Earth Day, we reflect on our students’ positive actions taken to tackle environmental issues. This has inspired our top tips below on what we can all do to have a more positive impact on our environment and earth.

01. Do your Research

Read up on environmental issues around the world on what we can do to help reduce the negative impact it has on the world. Max from Year 5M was learning about plastic waste in school and decided to take it upon himself to research the topic further. He found that plastic waste in oceans has a harmful effect on sealife. He created a board of his findings to share with his class and spread awareness.

Max has some great plastic pollution solution tips for us:

  1. Spread the word – stay informed on the issues and tell your friends & family about how they can be part of the solution.
  2. Avoid products containing microbeads – they have become a growing reason for our plastic pollution, which has entered our oceans from household scrubs, toothpaste, and body washes.
  3. Recycle properly – at present just 9% of single-use plastic is recycled. Always recycle if it cannot be reused.
  4. Support organisations addressing plastic pollution – they are actively working to reduce plastic waste in oceans, and they rely on support and donations to be able to continue the work they do.

02. Beach Clean

Make the places we live in a litter-free space. This helps stop the litter from ending up in our water systems and oceans. It also makes the areas we live in a cleaner space to enjoy! As part of Year 5’s Theme, ‘Protect our Planet’ the children did a beach clean at Crosby Beach. They wanted to help the local community by picking up litter after learning that 80% of litter on the ground ends up in our oceans!

03. Reuse plastics

Following their beach clean, our Year 5 pupils used the waste they collected to create something new, giving the waste a new life. They came up with some great inventions. The pupils made items such as; bird feeders, art, gifts, toothbrush holders, plant pots and many more items.

4. Visit a Recycling Centre

This ties into the first point of doing your research. The best way to understand better is to have a first-hand understanding and experience of what really happens. The Year 5 class visited the Gilmoss Recycling Centre to learn about which materials you can recycle and how you use non-recyclable materials for everyday items. They found the visit really informative and it assisted with their other environmental activities.

We hope you enjoyed this blog and feel inspired to make a positive difference in the world we live in! Happy Earth Day!
