Parents Association

The Parents Association is an active fundraising and social committee made up of parents and staff from Bright Sparks, The Mount and St. Mary’s College.

The PA constitution (see link below) provides detailed information about the objectives and operating arrangements of the Parents Association, however in short we aim to:

  • build and strengthen links between our homes and our school
  • raise money to support requests from school and parents for extraordinary equipment, activities and items of capital expenditure which may fall outside school budgets
  • actively support the school in making all of our children’s nursery and school experiences stimulating, challenging and fun.

All parents who have a child in any of the three schools and all staff are members of the Parents Association. The PA has a committee which is comprised of 4 Officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer) and 12 additional committee members, all of whom have voting rights.

The main PA committee members meet once a month (during term time) to discuss and plan events, however, we welcome as many parents as possible to join us at these meetings, details of which are posted on the website. Parents do not have to be a committee member to make suggestions or take part in any of these activities.

We usually have our Annual General Meeting in June of each year, however as an exception, the AGM was held in January this year. The AGM is a great opportunity to get updates about the school year, previous Parents Association events, how we have spent the funds raised and to make new suggestions for improving what we do. It is also the time when we elect new committee members. Again we warmly invite all parents to come along.

The PA organises events and activities throughout the school year ranging from Halloween Discos to Nearly New Uniform Sales to Autumn Fayres. The events are aimed at families although we do plan some for parents and grown ups only! Suggestions for new and fun events are always very welcome.

All money raised at our events is banked by our Treasurer and we agree how to spend the money at Parents Association meetings over the year. At these meetings members of staff or parents / committee members put forward a case against specific criteria describing how they would like to use the money, remembering that these funds are for those items the school budget does not cover. Once all the requests are made there is a vote and the funds are assigned.

In previous years the funds have been used to purchase many different items for the children including a state-of-the-art cookery room at the College, sport, music and art resources and outdoor play equipment at Bright Sparks and The Mount.

Any parent is welcome to take part in and help with events and we encourage as many parents as possible to get involved. There are lots of ways you can offer support - sharing your ideas or feedback on existing and new events and activities and spreading the word about what we are doing is a terrific help, and whilst recognising that life is busy, if you can offer time before, during or after the events themselves it is always much appreciated.

The 'Forthcoming PA events' link below shows some of the planned events and meetings for this year. We will send out more details nearer the time and hope to see many of you over the coming months.
